Many years ago, pregnant women just did what was natural with little thought to nutrition or outside influences.  When prenatal vitamins were first suggested, I'm sure that women were thinking that it was a fad, a scam or a money making scheme.  Doctors didn't know about how folic acid impacted a developing baby.  Now we know how essential it is during pregnancy and what birth defects it can prevent.  However, I should point out that folic acid does not guarantee the prevention of birth defects but increases the odds they will prevented.

Today, taking a prenatal vitamin isn't given a second thought and is strongly encouraged for many reasons learned over the years.  Why wouldn't using a prenatal curriculum be the same?  We are learning more and more about the prenatal environment every day.

It is safe to assume that influencing a baby's cognitive development during fetal stages can be one such factor.  The realization that learning in the womb actually takes place and that learning begins before birth is giving way to prenatal education in mainstream ideas.

The brain is a complex organ and scientists only know a fraction about it and its functions.  To push aside an idea is a little premature.  Using a prenatal curriculum during pregnancy has so many great benefits.  BabyPlus doesn't guarantee a genius baby, a perfect sleeper or a highly gifted child, but it does increase the odds of strengthening the cognitive blueprint.

While pregnant, we try to eat well and take care of the fetal environment nutritiously........but we also must take care of the fetal environment during critical times in early cognitive development.  You don’t have to "give up" all the foods you love when you’re pregnant -  you just need make sure that most of your choices are healthy ones.  Try to mix things up a bit - that way you will be getting your nutrients without getting bored with your choices.  I love fruits and vegetables, so this was not hard for me! Good prenatal care is essential in the short term and the long term.

Take advantage of the abundance of fruit and vegetable at the farmer's market or grocery aisles to add a fresh, seasonal variety to your menu!

Remember - everything you do now - while pregnant - will impact your child for a lifetime!

Is there that much of a difference between playing music and using BabyPlus?  Absolutely!

While appropriate for infants and young children, music is too complex for a developing baby.  BabyPlus simplifies the complexity of music and breaks it down to a "language" your baby can understand--a single beat.  By introducing BabyPlus, a similar beat relative to his or her environment, learning begins during the most important stages of fetal development.

There is no doubt that after your baby is born, music is a wonderful tool.  Start out simple and then once your baby is born, you can work up to building an appreciation for music.

With the amount of information you can find on the internet these days, there are bound to be some details that are not exactly accurate.  You probably read blogs, Facebook pages, and Twitter updates and wonder:  Is this stuff really true?  Today we are going to correct some of those myths that you might have read in the past.

Myth: Standing on your head after sex can increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

Truth: Some experts say that lying down after sex for 20 to 30 minutes can boost your chances of conception because it keeps the sperm inside you. However, standing on your head is NOT a proven aid in conception.

Myth: The shape and height of your belly can indicate your baby's gender.
Truth: This popular belief that women carry girls high and boys low just isn't true. The shape and height of your belly is determined by your muscle tone, uterus, and the position the baby is in. That's why someone may think you're having a boy because you're carrying low, when actually the baby just dropped lower into the pelvis because you're closer to delivery.

Myth: Fetal heart rate can indicate your baby's sex.
Truth: A normal fetal heart rate is between 120 and 160 beats per minute (bpm), although some people think if it's faster (usually above the 140 bpm range) it's a girl and if it's slower it's a boy. There have been no studies that show that heart rate is a predictor for a baby's sex. Your baby's heart rate will probably differ from prenatal visit to prenatal visit anyway — depending on the age of the fetus and fetal development at the time of the visit.

Myth: The shape and fullness of your face during pregnancy can indicate your baby's gender.
Truth: Every woman gains weight differently during pregnancy, and every woman experiences different skin changes. If people tell you that because your face is round and rosy you're having a girl, you might want to think about getting an ultrasound instead!

Rev Your Child’s Brain Power With Rhythms - Part 2

(written by Marcia Ellett, June, 2009)

Nadine Gaab, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Boston, said in a recent USA Today article that babies can “learn about rhythm from hearing music in the womb, feeling the rhythm of a mother’s movements or listening to her heartbeat.”

And Daniel Levlin, author of This is Your Brain on Music, confirms “the auditory system of the fetus is fully functional about twenty weeks after conception.”

So whether babies are born with an innate understanding of rhythm or not, you can help them along. Exactly what can you do to stimulate early learning and a lifetime of music appreciation in your children? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Use the BabyPlus curriculum while you’re expecting to introduce your baby to the sequential learning process through rhythm.
  • Expose your little bundle of joy to music before and after he or she arrives. Levlin said from birth to age five is the opportune time to develop your child’s communication skills and musical aptitude. Exposing them to a variety of melodies and rhythms can also enhance your child’s listening skills.
  • Consider enrolling your child in a weekly pre-school music program where they can experience the joy of having fun with music and song. They won’t even know they’re working on their brainpower.
  • As they get older, nurture any interest they show in playing a musical instrument. There is strong evidence to suggest that students who play musical instruments tend to get better grades in core subjects such as math, science, reading and language arts, and they do better on standardized tests too.

When you are pregnant you naturally want to do everything you can for your unborn baby.  You eat right, receive proper medical care and avoid harmful elements.  A concept that is gaining more and more attention during pregnancy is the idea of prenatal learning.  Some people think that music is the way to go, some think it isn't necessary at all, and others use a prenatal curriculum such as BabyPlus.

While music is an excellent tool after your baby is born, it is just too complex in the womb.  Sounds need to be broken down into more basic and simpler beats, such as the maternal heartbeat.  There are several studies regarding the importance of learning in the womb but as with any complex element, such as fetal development, there is still so much left to learn.  We are just tapping into the benefits.

An article at Pregnancytoday.com talks about different ways of communicating before birth.  Check it out here http://www.pregnancytoday.com/articles/facts-and-fun-resources/prenatal-learning-6435/2/.  There are some interesting viewpoints and support for learning in the womb.

Everybody has an opinion!

Parents recommend everything from doctors to diaper cream.  Ask any mom, and she will tell you with complete confidence that one bottle type is better than another.  Or, that you absolutely should not use a certain type of lotion or stroller.  The many products available can make decisions confusing, so having a friend or relative recommend something can carry quite a bit of weight...

Well, BabyPlus parents are just as confident that the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System is a must-have for all pregnancies.  "Our" parents are adamant about the fact that the use of this early learning opportunity during the stages of fetal development will absolutely have a positive effect on your baby that lasts a lifetime.  We continually speak to parents who are truly puzzled that anyone would not use this opportunity for learning in the womb.  We agree!  In fact, our recent poll of BabyPlus parents indicated an incredible 97% would recommend BabyPlus to a friend.

It's funny how sometimes when you are so focused and wrapped up in a task you can easily forget the big picture.  Like today, for example, I was working on catching up on emails and digging in to requests from over the weekend.  I was so busy doing the business side of my job that I really stepped back when I received a call asking exactly what BabyPlus is.  Oh yeah, that's why I'm here!

I think the best way to explain BabyPlus is that it is complex sounds broken down to their simplest form -- a single beat.  This is the same sound your baby hears day in and day out -- your heartbeat.

Compare it to teaching a child to read.  Letters are the building blocks of words.  You had to know what letters were before you could put the sounds together and form words.  You wouldn't expect a newborn to be able to recite the alphabet.  The complexity of words needs to be reduced down even further to a simple beat.  By playing this beat in conjunction with your heartbeat and varying the speed throughout pregnancy, you are teaching the baby to discern and differentiate between sounds.  This is the very basic start of the learning process.

A prenatal vitamin does for your baby's body development what the BabyPlus sounds do for your baby's cognitive development.  It's just there in the background doing it's job during critical and important stages of fetal development.  We don't say you will have a perfect baby or a genius baby.  We are just providing a tool that gives your baby a head start in learning.

Mother's Day, May 10, 2009, is a little less than a month away and a day when we will honor mothers, grandmothers, mothers-to-be and those who play a maternal role in our lives.

As a mom, you wear many hats.  You are a chef, a healer, a chauffeur, a teacher, etc.  The jobs start long before the feedings and diaper changes.  From conception, you become a nutritionist because everything you eat or drink goes to your baby.  You are kinda like a chauffeur because you transport your baby everywhere.  The list goes on and on.

A great tool to use in your role as a teacher is BabyPlus.  Learning in the womb encourages strong cognitive development during the very important stages of fetal development.  Your baby is familiar with your heartbeat and the similar simple set of sounds of BabyPlus teaches him or her to differentiate and discern between the two sounds as the lessons progress.  This is the most basic foundation of learning.

So when you are deciding on a way to celebrate friends who will be moms soon, think of the gift of learning.  BabyPlus is a gift that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Dear Mommy,

Thank you for using BabyPlus while I was in your tummy.  I looked forward every day to hearing the soft rhythmic sounds that were so like your heartbeat.  Did you feel me kick sometimes when I knew it was time for a lesson?  I was letting you know that I was happy for the lesson to begin.  I loved learning in the womb!  I am glad that you read so many articles on prenatal development and critical times is early cognitive development.

I hope you noticed that when I was being born my eyes were open.  Also, I was very calm and relaxed.  Did you notice that I nursed very readily and was able to self-soothe?  I want you to know that is because you took the time to learn about the benefits of using BabyPlus during the stages of fetal development.

When I was a toddler - did you notice that I reached developmental milestones earlier?  Plus, I was ready for school and had greater creativity and independence.  I bet you'll never forget when I was the only one who could hit the T-ball off the T on my team?  All the dads were amazed - and you told everyone about BabyPlus, which I thought was really neat!

Now I am off to school, and I know I am ready for it because I was born to learn!  You gave me the gift of a lifetime just by using BabyPlus while you were pregnant.

Thanks for using BabyPlus Mommy!

If you want other mommies and daddies to know about BabyPlus - you can send them to www.babyplus.com.

Is there a difference between playing music or reading and using BabyPlus?  Absolutely!

While appropriate for infants and young children, music is too random and complex.  Reading is complex as well and is not basic enough for your unborn baby to understand.

BabyPlus simplifies the complexity of music even more and breaks it down to a "language" your baby can understand--a single beat.  He or she hears your heartbeat constantly and by introducing BabyPlus, a similar beat, learning begins during the most critical stages of fetal development.

After your baby is born, music is a wonderful tool and reading cannot be stressed enough.  Start out simple and once your baby is born, then you can work up to these activities.

Click here to learn more about BabyPlus and how beneficial a simple set of sounds can be!

Most BabyPlus babies more readily nurse, are relaxed and alert at birth, are more interactive and responsive and have increased the ability to self soothe.  Later in life many demonstrate earlier developmental milestones, longer attention spans, greater creativity and independence, enhanced intellectual abilities and have improved school readiness.

BabyPlus babies are not guaranteed to have excellent demeanor all the time, to graduate college at the age of 10, or be 100% perfect angels.  BabyPlus babies are boys and girls who got a head start by strengthening their cognitive development during critical fetal stages.

We do not guarantee perfection any more than any other product in any market!  We just know that you are doing something great for your baby!

In my last blog, I talked about breaking down big tasks or chores into to 15 minute chunks would help make them seem more manageable.  As I was finishing it, I realized that in a way, BabyPlus is based on the general principle that if you break something down to the very basics things are easier to accomplish.

Many people feel that playing music to your unborn child is the best way to develop a young mind.  But your unborn baby doesn't totally comprehend the complexity of music.  But if you break down music into its most basic form, a single beat, it resembles the mother's heartbeat which your baby is exposed to 24 hours a day .  By using this basic sound to strenghten cognitive ability during the most influential period in fetal development, you are laying the groundwork for learning for the rest of his or her lifetime.

It's amazing how this basic factor can have such a profound impact!  It's just another example of getting back to basics!

Click here to learn about how such a simple set of sounds can have such an amazing impact!

So, why not music?

In short, all babies are exposed to speech and music, but these pass by them as white noise, absolutely meaningless.

Every unborn child experiences a sonic environment - outside voices, television, radio, CDs - all passing through the abdominal wall (which lowers their volume by about 35 decibels, and muffles these sounds . . . like listening underwater), but most dominant is mother's blood pulsing constantly past the womb at 95 decibels, loud as a rock band; even so, the fetus sleeps about 80 percent of each day.

To promote a beginning pattern recognition, such basic stimuli must be very simple and repetitive, something which neither speech nor music can accomplish.  The repetitive curriculum of the mother's heartbeat sounds is exactly what your baby needs to begin prenatal learning.

Music is wonderful for infants and children.  As prenatal enrichment, however, it has proved ineffective.  Music is too random and complex, while the spoken word is not understandable for an unborn child.  Instead, the recurring patterns of BabyPlus--based upon the maternal heartbeat's tone--and the changes in rhythm are the most beneficial sonic influences.  BabyPlus may sound repetitive to adults, but it is optimal as the earliest form of learning . . . an age-appropriate natural curriculum.
