My boys were talking about only two days left of school. Their thoughts were of freedom and sleeping in. My thoughts were of thinking of ways to keep them busy. I'm thinking this year it will only take three weeks to hear the words, "I'm bored." But then with a blink of an eye, I am asking what color of backpack they prefer for the beginning of school.Boredom and too much freedom is a recipe for trouble. But it's also a chance to work on creativity. No one wants to do workbooks during summer vacation but what about sneaking in math, English and maybe even a little creative writing?
My family fell in love with Disney World last year and have been dreaming of when we all get to go back. I know they knew it wasn't a cheap vacation but I don't think they were fully aware of how expensive a trip like that can cost. They knew the websites inside and out and could tell you every name of each resort on Disney property in addition to many other details.
I casually brought up the idea of a summer assignment. Before the glazed eyes took full effect, I said it was about Disney. Immediately, they perked up and wanted to know more. I said they would have a budget, and I wanted them to plan out a trip for the four of us. They would have to research and compare going at certain times of the year, staying at different resorts, etc. I think the challenge will be to manipulate the numbers and really use their creativity. I also told them I wanted it typed up in paragraphs because I may need to refer to their findings when we get to plan another trip. Need to keep the English skills sharp!
Maybe this will inspire a future Disney Cast Member or Travel Agent but for now it may keep cobwebs from forming in their minds from all that they learned this past school year.
Finding creative and inexpensive ways to keep kids entertained during the summer months may take a little effort but come the first day of school, you will be thankful that you won't be starting over.
