How many times a day do we feel we tell our kids the same things over and over and that it just goes in one ear and out the other? I know with my boys, I feel like I'm constantly repeating myself and they don't hear a word. Kinda like in A Christmas Story when Ralphie is told numerous times that he would shoot his eye out if he got a Red Ryder BB gun. But every now and then there is small evidence that they actually did hear me and absorbed what I was saying even if I didn't think they were. Maybe the repetition eventually sinks in whether they are aware or not.
Repetition is how we learn, even before we are even born! Prenatal curriculum is based on this idea. The repetition of the simple set of sounds that resembles the mother's heartbeat encourages the cognitive development during the important stages of fetal development. The way we learn is through repetition, which eventually imprints in our memory. This in turn benefits babies in so many ways from their sleep schedule to being able to self soothe. It's amazing to see what an influence using this simple concept could be in so many ways for a lifetime!
